What shall I do? I am speaking in Japanese!
My student, Ron, was born in the US.
His grandparents are Japanese.
He came to live in Japan when he was already an adult.
He has been studying Japanese hard at a Japanese school
Japanese people often think Ron to be Japanese.
So naturally, they speak to him in Japanese.
When he says to them,
“Sorry, I cannot understand Japanese very well”,
100% of the time, they are shocked, Ron tells me.
There are times when the person says to him,
”What the heck?!”.
”I don’t know what to do when that is said to me.
I cannot help feeling guilty, though.”
What should he do, do you think?
Of course he cannot walk around in a T shirt
with print telling,
“Though my look is Japanese, I am a foreigner.”
The opposite happens, too.
My other student, James who is fluent in Japanese
was one day walking down the street in Ueno with his Japanese friends.
While his Japanese friend was from Osaka, he has no idea about Ueno.
Two were walking, then a Japanese guy talked to them.
”Excuse me, could I walk from here to Tokyo station?”
James replied to him in Japanese.
「いけますけど、ちょっとありますよ」
which exactly means, “Yes, you could, but it is a bit of a distance.”
But this guy gave James a quick glance
and was staring at his Japanese friend.
The friend of James cocked his head and also was looking at James.
So James, once again, said to this guy in Japanese.
「ここから、東京駅まで、歩いていけますけど、25分ぐらいはかかりますよ」
which is, “From hereto Tokyo station, you could walk,
but it takes at least 25 minutes.”
The guy this time, without looking at James,
said to his Japanese friend in Japanese.
”Sorry to have taken your time, thank you.”
And he walked away!
”Sensei, I was talking all in Japanese.
Well….What should I say in Japanese that I am speaking in Japanese?”
I hear the same sort of story relatively often!

私の生徒のロンさんは、アメリカで生まれました。
彼のおじいさんとおばあさんは日本人です。
ロンさんは、大人になってから日本に来ました。
彼は日本語学校で、いっしょうけんめい勉強しています。
そのロンさんはよく、日本人だと思われます。
なので、日本人に、日本語で話しかけられます。
そのとき彼が
「すみません、日本語はあまりわかりません」
と言うと、その日本人は100%、びっくりするそうです。
ときには、「なんだよ!」と言われたりします。
「なんだよ、って言われてもこまります。 で
も、ぼくはそんなとき、
(どうもすみませ~ん^^;) という気持ちになってしまいます」
ロンさんは、どうしたらいいのでしょう。 まさか、
「私は顔は日本人ですが、外国人です」
というTシャツを着て歩くこともできませんよね!
その逆も、よくあります。
日本語がペラペラのジェームスさんは、
日本人の友だちと、上野を歩いていました。
日本人の友だちは、大阪人なので、上野のことはわかりません。
二人が歩いていると、日本人の男の人が話しかけてきました。
「ちょっとお聞きしますけど、
ここから東京駅まで 歩いて行けますか?」
ジェームスさんは、男の人に日本語でこたえました。
「行けますけど、ちょっと距離がありますよ」
けれどもその人は、ジェームスさんをチラッと見て、
それから日本人の友だちを見ています。
日本人の友だちの方も、首をかしげて、
ジェームスさんを見ています。
そこでジェームスさんはもう一度、男の人に、
「ここから東京駅まで、歩いて行けますけど、
25分ぐらいは かかりますよ」
と言ってみました。
男の人はまた、今度はジェームスさんを見ないで、
日本人の友だちに、言いまし た。
「あ、どうもすみませんでした、ありがとうございました」
そして、歩いて行ってしまったそうです。
「先生、ぼくは日本語で話していたんですけど。
あのう・・
I am speaking in Japanese.って、
なんと言えばいいんですか?」
これは、けっこうよく聞く話です。
