How to use 「で」(1) place of activity

Particle 「で」is quite useful and simple.
Let’s check how we can use 「で」one by one.

「で」is used to show the place of activity.

がっこうの  カフェ  [ で ]   ともだち に あいました。
I met a friend at the case in my school.

Don’t jump to 「に」particle when you see a place in a sentence.

Compare these sentences and see the usage of each particles.

私は  学校の カフェ に 行きました。

私は  学校のカフェ で ともだち に あいました。

What if you want to say “I went to the cafe to see my friend.”
This is a bit tricky.

First, let’s figure out the factors we want to say.

You went to the cafe. ➡︎ 私はカフェに行きました。
The purpose is to see your friend. ➡︎ともだちに あいます。

私は[カフェに行きます] ➕[ともだちにあいます]

=  私は、カフェ ともだち   あい・・いきました。
I went to a cafe to see my friend.

See?  The same particle 「に」appear three times in one sentence!

The first に is for “to the cafe”,
and the second に is for あいます,
then the last one is used to make this part,
to go to see= あい・に・いきます。
Remember?  The verb いきますalways comes with に。

Construction of purpose sentence.

[Person]  は   [Place]  に
[something/someone]  を or  に
[ verb/mas-stem ]   に・いきます。

あいます(purpose)-いきます=あい・に・いきます。to go to meet
とります(porpose)-いきます=とり・に・いきます。ti go to get

Shall we practice then?

(1)  I went to Donki to buy a new hair drier.

(2)  My friend went to the museum to see an exhibition.

(3) We want to go to Kamakura to see the big Buddha.

Answers

(1)私はドンキに あたらしいドライヤーを 買いに行きました。

(2)友だちは びじゅつかんに てんらんかい を 見に行きました。

(3)私たちは かまくらに だいぶつ を 見に行きたいです。

Of course, instead of いきます、you could use きます。

Do you understand these sentences below?

せいとたちは 100円ショップに ノートを買いに来ました。

せんせいは、ようちえんに えいごを おしえに 来ました。

こどもたちは、はくぶつかんに きょうりゅう を 見にいきました。
